SELFIE TAKING: ADVANTAGE AND ABUSE

The rate at which people use phone in Nigeria is astronomically increasing. It is very rare to see a house without at least a phone, especially android phone. An average Nigerian prefers to buy “Android” phone than to eat or even to cloth him or herself. The zeal for possessing a phone is skyrocketing now just like hunger and sex urge. The producers have no choice than to channel their products to a country that prefers to buy outside than to produce. Well, these producers are not meant to be blame for the high prices they sell these gadgets because they are selling their ideas, as “Ideas rule the world “.
Virtually all camera phone users ,especially with android phone users, the rampant behaviour now is taking of “Selfie”.Although, taking selfie does not start recently but it is just that the level at which people take selfie recently is geometrically increasing.
WHAT IS SELFIE?
A selfie is a self-portrait photograph, typically taken with a digital camera or a camera phone held in hand or assisted by a selfie stick. Selfies are always shared on the social networks such as facebook, twitter, instragram and a lot more. The taking of selfie started some years back in 1839 by a man called Robert Cornelius. The official use of the word selfie started in 2002.
Despite the unimaginable joy selfie takers derive from their doings, they also tend to witness some forms of stress and frustrations. It was discovered at University of Parma that a selfies taken by non-professional photographers show a slight bias in their appearance. At times, the cheeks may be bigger than normal, the body may be thin and the likes and this has led to frustrations among people. In 2014, a man was diagonised with”body dysmorphic disorder” recounted to have spent ten hours attempting to take right “Selfie”.Ten good hours? Imagine the progress that can make in one’s life if well maximised. Psychological studies conducted in 2015 among media users revealed and suggested that there is a relationship between selfie posting and narccism .Selfie taking has brought countless evils to people in abroad. The likes of a 21 year old Mexican Veterinarian who had been drinking, pointed a gun to his temple for a selfie and released a shot, killing himself. To say but few, many have died on selfie taking abroad.

SELFIE TAKING IN NIGERIA

I asked myself questions just of recent that “Why is selfie taking going on rampant nowadays? Is it that they just invented it or we are just moving to that spectrum of socialisation as we normally do. Selfie taking is crazily increasing among students in Nigeria especially where I school, that is Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife. Students now enjoy selfie taking than any other reasonable things. Selfie in lecture rooms, selfie in toilet, even selfie on a bike, selfie on the middle of expressway and the
likes. We are now in the era where students get back to their homes or hostels to pick phone while exam is about to start, just to take selfie after exam. The rate at which people are taking selfie nowadays, I am scared of not having bad sides of selfie as some foreign countries are witnessing it.
TAKE SELFIE WISELY
The concluding art of my article will be in form of pieces of advice. Selfie as I have explained before is the art of taking portrait and to see your real picture. Then, why do we need to harm ourselves in the name of taking pictures. As adage says, “Sick ones will always like to consume what will kill him or her”. Ours shouldn’t be like that. Never get yourself addicted to taking selfie so that it will not be something you can’t do without. Selfie taking is very good but on important occasions and not at all time which eventually take a lot time to be used for productive things
